They\u2019re chill \u201cthird spaces\u201d \u2014 places other than the home and office where people gather \u2014 with opportunities for delicious food and drink, some conversation, or writing or reading or thinking, plus good music, and no one pressuring you to move along.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000g3b6m3p6wr1mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But these businesses are also a percolator of revolutionary thought leadership. For the last 500 years, coffee shops have been the platform for political, social and creative movements, incubators of artistic pursuits, and the marketplace of ideas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000h3b6mdmgrc3u9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most importantly, coffee shops are easily accessible examples of what political scientists call \u201csocial infrastructure,\u201d a way to connect us in an era when we are becoming increasingly solitary and divided. More specifically, these spaces can be what Harvard professor Robert Putnam<strong> <\/strong>calls \u201cbridging social capital\u201d that bring strangers together (as nearly everyone loves coffee).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000i3b6m2vkr7fqv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his book, \u201cBowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community,\u201d Putnam explains that the interactive and integrating effect of \u201cbridging\u201d correlates with community strength and societal tolerance. \u201cIf we had a golden magic wand that could miraculously create more bridging social capital,\u201d he writes, \u201cwe would surely want to use it.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5prugsc001r3b6ms4ur9zrp@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-brief-history-of-coffeehouses\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A brief history of coffeehouses<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000l3b6mlhlkrm0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Not long after, coffeehouses in Philadelphia, Boston and New York were meeting places for colonialists making plans for revolution. They weren\u2019t drinking British tea, that\u2019s for sure. And taverns were less conducive to next-day follow-through.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/cm5ps4vpw002f3b6muldovrd5@published\" data-component-name=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">            <\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related article<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">What putting up a bird feeder can lead to<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000m3b6m5a35pvkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Vienna, the old kaffeeh\u00e4users of the early 1900s were practically a second home to writers and intellectuals (including Hemingway, Freud and Lenin), some accepting patrons\u2019 mail, letting them host roundtables, and keeping a supply of pens and paper available for when lightning struck.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000n3b6m8v3odld4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A lot of inspiring (if not downright subversive) thinking is brewed in these spaces where we now bring our laptops and friends. All of us, for generations, have been stimulated by the company and the coffee shop\u2019s principal export \u2014 a beverage tasked with the dauntingly vital, and metaphoric, job of waking up the world. Add teahouses, more popular in some countries than coffee, and you have even more access to this setting.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5prxzbs001u3b6m9n1zqqke@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"better-than-home\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Better than home<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000p3b6mtfusg2mo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I like coffee a whole lot, but I love coffee shops more. The spaces aren\u2019t just designed for talking, writing, reading and hanging out \u2014 they actually make you want to do those things.<strong> <\/strong>The baristas are all slightly cooler than your friends. The music is often reliably well curated (see previous sentence about the baristas). The din of the place and its caffeinated energy are life-affirming.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000q3b6m6ezp6kdi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some of these qualities are evocative of your home, but they are much better than your own kitchen or living room, unless you\u2019ve invested heavily in a professional-grade commercial espresso maker and host a steady stream of friends.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000r3b6meu1pf7zu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But largely why I recommend hanging out in coffee shops is because of the people who historically appreciate hanging out in coffee shops: artists, musicians, poets, chess players, conversationalists, readers, writers, students and cultural revolutionaries \u2014 in short, my favorite types of people. They\u2019re all there. Hangin\u2019 out. Waiting for you to join the<strong> <\/strong>conversation.<strong> <\/strong>    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5prygta001x3b6m8aam2f2g@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"sip-and-stay-awhile\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Sip and stay awhile<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000t3b6m7tf5rq9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I don\u2019t understand why you would pay for a coffee and then walk out of the coffee shop with it. To sip it while you walk or drive? That\u2019s like buying a concert ticket but listening to the music from the parking lot. Twenty years ago, if you went into a caf\u00e9 in Paris and asked for a coffee to go, they wouldn\u2019t know how to help you. The value is in the staying.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000u3b6mgiel1r3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Think of your favorite coffee drink as the price of admission to the further enjoyable coffee shop experience. \u201cI bought a cup of coffee, I live here now,\u201d Jerry Seinfeld explained in an episode of his coffee shop-set series, \u201cComedians in Cars Getting Coffee.\u201d But staying is also what makes a community gathering space the bridging social capital we collectively need.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000v3b6minyu97mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            My first java hang was just off campus where I went to school, the University of Maryland at College Park. Planet X was a space that looked like it was decorated from the furniture section of a quirky secondhand store, including a lamp made from a golden Buddha statue. Enlightening! The coffee shop hosted (bad) poetry nights and occasional live music open mikes. The coffee wasn\u2019t great, but the collegiate vibe was. We also had a Starbucks in the Student Union, but it wasn\u2019t the same.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/cm5ps3718002d3b6mw1v9trr7@published\" data-component-name=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--video\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">\n<div class=\"image__label image__label--type-video image__label--small image__label--visible\">            <span class=\"image__label-icon\"><\/span>video          <\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related video<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">Watch: Tourists can now sip coffee 1000 feet in the air on a Laos zipline<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000w3b6m630uvsar@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            No shade on Starbucks and other chains \u2014 they helped usher in the so-called second wave coffee shop movement that created a consumer thirst for caffeinated beverages on every street corner and led to the third wave of artisanal coffee craftsmanship we now enjoy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000x3b6m441s61fk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While some people find comfort in the familiar chain, I prefer the personality of a one-off. The independent coffee shop is designed with the owner\u2019s style and personality rather than the franchise-mandated-sameness manual handed down from corporate. Plus, all coffee drinkers know the dark stuff tastes better from a mug than a paper cup.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2000y3b6m3y3673tn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But no matter the quality of the scone, the alchemy of a creamy yet strong cortado, the hipness of the playlist or the comfort of the couch, it\u2019s the patrons who give a coffee shop its essence.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5przxa500233b6mvx1j3nuw@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-makes-coffee-shops-so-special\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        What makes coffee shops so special<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200103b6mmpi3wzzu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I seek out coffee shops when I travel, in the way my brother visits record stores on his trips and my older daughter explores thrift stores. I\u2019ll size a place up quickly and decide whether it\u2019s worth writing a review of it in my journal, rating the coffee shop by various categories (seating, ambience, treats, cupwear, customers, and so on).<strong> <\/strong>I track them as a way to remember next time I\u2019m in that city or to recommend to others going there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200113b6m5yykdcvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But what makes the coffee shop experience important to us as individuals and a society is something greater than the sum of its parts. The specialness is probably best categorized by Putnam\u2019s term, \u201cbridging social capital.\u201d All walks of life come together in these spaces, sitting elbow to scone in the more popular places. Even going alone, you\u2019re going to interact, make connections, enjoy the company of strangers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200123b6mazn7ac22@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I asked the owners of some of my favorite coffee shops what they think is so valuable about the spaces they curate. Here\u2019s what they said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200133b6mluxudsea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rebecca Henson, co-owner of Wildflour Bakery &amp; Cafe in Emigrant, Montana: \u201cI read recently that folks these days are at a deficit of \u2018third places,\u2019 ie, not work or home. It really got me thinking about how important having another place to feel at ease can be, particularly in these wacky times, where finding your place in community can seem confusing. Food and travel are both such connectors, and we try our best to facilitate an openness that is evident immediately when you step through our doors.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200143b6md6kxvcp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Amanda and Anthony Stromoski of Rough Draft Bar &amp; Books in Kingston, New York: \u201cCoffee shops, especially when they\u2019re designed with comfortable and communal seating in mind, can fill the need for that important \u2018third space\u2019 where people can escape, feel comfortable, meet friends, and make new human connections.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200153b6mjec07azn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mica Burgess,<strong> <\/strong>manager of The Den in Washington, DC: \u201cI think historically they\u2019ve been such an important gathering place for intellectuals, for creatives, for revolutionaries. I don\u2019t think this has changed. They are places of comfort, places you can rely on when perhaps life has you in a whirlwind. They are places where people from all walks of life can connect over food, drinks, and ambiance. It can feel difficult to find that connection lately. Ultimately, coffeeshops are havens for anyone and everyone who needs one.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200163b6m8hpoi1rc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ken Leonard, owner of Mozart\u2019s Coffee Roasters in Austin, Texas: \u201cYou have a lot of people who have fractured lives and moved from where they\u2019re from. You have people who viscerally need a place to connect to people. A stranger can quickly become a terrific friend just by sitting next to each other at the coffee bar.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200173b6mrs6ib0c3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cameron Moores, co-owner of C&amp;P Coffee Company in Seattle: \u201cThey foster a sense of community that is hard to find in this world of electronic gatherings. In our instance, we help develop relationships by introducing customers (neighbors) to each other, supporting causes (fundraisers, arts and crafts fairs), promoting local business like dogwalkers and housepainters, supporting arts, music, poetry. It\u2019s so fun to see a community grow but also continue a sense of place and stability.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct200183b6m63dwkonb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            G\u00edsli Marteinn, co-owner and co-founder of Reykjav\u00edk, Iceland\u2019s Kaffih\u00fas Vesturb\u00e6jar: \u201cWhen done right, the coffeeshop is a democratic, open, public space that can give you a rest from the rest of the world, kind of a safe space. It\u2019s about the art of hanging out, about what happens in those slow moments with those you\u2019re hanging out. And something magical happens in those moments that are unscripted. And I think our society benefits from those moments and needs more of them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2001a3b6mjt9d27gd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I have other favorites, of course, spread all over the world. My coffee shop ideal is the cozy-rustic Macy\u2019s European Coffeehouse &amp; Bakery in Flagstaff, Arizona. In Los Angeles, it\u2019s the outdoor Trails Caf\u00e9 in Griffith Park. In Atlanta, where I live, I favor the low-key cool of Chrome Yellow. In San Francisco, where I used to live, it\u2019s Java Beach across from the dunes and Pacific Ocean. In Manhattan, another former home, I love the Hungarian Pastry Shop next to Columbia University, with its stale coffee, dim lighting, and hit-or-miss pastries. It\u2019s packed with earnest students, arguing about communism, free will and other topics you only really think about when you\u2019re in college and hanging out in coffee shops.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5prpct2001b3b6mw2f2m7qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And that\u2019s the great thing about coffee shops.
